Spring Clean Your Finances
By Liz Moult
Although it may not yet feel like it, spring is finally here! I came across this article, "Freshen Up Your Finances with a Thorough Spring Cleaning," by CFP Board’s Consumer Advocate, Eleanor Blayney. (You may recognize her name from financial planning articles, as she is an expert in the field of comprehensive financial planning and LWPM colleague.) In this article, Eleanor shares ten things everyone can do to “clean up” their finances.
This article particularly caught my attention because I’m in the process of spring cleaning my apartment to prepare for a big move. As some of you may know, I’m in the final stages of building a home, and Eleanor’s tips will provide a smoother, and hopefully lighter, transition. She mentions the importance of reviewing beneficiary designations, creating and sticking to a budget, and checking credit scores every four months. I strongly suggest tip 6: “Set reminders of payments due.” As I mentioned in a previous newsletter article, Mint.com is a fantastic way to stay on top of your budget and set reminders when you’ve overspent in a particular category. There’s a plethora of other apps and websites that can help you with this task so you can spend more time enjoying the great outdoors.
Happy spring to all!
